Hairshaming Peer Pressure in Society

Oh shit… I’m actually writing something on topic and not just some type of “Please Excuse our Dust post…”

STOP TELLING PEOPLE THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE LONG HAIR TO ATTRACT A SIGNIFICANT OTHER! PEOPLE THAT HAVE LONG HAIR ARE SICK AND TIRED OF THIS SHIT! IF WE CHOOSE TO HAVE LONG HAIR IT IS BECAUSE WE WANT IT NOT BECAUSE SOCIETY DEEMS IT (or not) AS A STANDARD.

The past couple of days I’ve been mentioning I am going to shave my head. I got a lot of pushback about it, mostly in the form of attracting someone of the opposite sex (as I am attracted to the opposite sex). It is usually things about how women love a guy with long thick hair and if I shaved it I wouldn’t be attractive.

Women I am sorry that you have to go through this when you make any decisions about your hair. I understand the visual and tactile pleasures that comes from a good set of hair, and I’m guilty as charged for also enjoying them, the important thing boils down to is your own comfort. It is about how you feel when your hair is the way it is.

When these discussions happen about my hair, what women tend to do if they are in reach (and not in a work environment) is pull my hair. They like to grab it and just pull my head back, not to rough, but now that I think about it, without consent. That last part is not a complaint on my part as I tend to be so generally touch starved that I’ll take it almost anyway I can get, but it goes to show that if a man did that to a woman it would not be okay. Women shouldn’t do it to men without consent either.

Hair is not the end all be all of a person. While the plumage might draw the eye, what keeps someone is the integrity of the person themselves. I may handicap myself because of my lack of haircare, but you know something?

You’re not looking at my hair when you listen to the podcast.

Just like you aren’t looking at my hair now.

I got my head shaved at lunch much to the horror of the people at work that keep telling me that I shouldn’t shave my head.
